As you pull up to your house everyday returning from work or from running an errand, you're able to spot your front door from far away. Every day, the same color as when you bought the house, and you've always considered changing it. But, maybe you didn't realize just how easy this project can be!
My wife and I purchased our new home about a year and a half ago now and with that purchase came an instant list of house projects we wanted to tackle. Painting the walls comes first, followed by home decor, pictures and picture frames, sprucing up the backyard, and the list goes on and on...
On our list (and I suspect this to be on many new homeowner lists) was to eventually paint the front door a new, more welcoming color, that aligned better with our personalities and our theme for the house (we've committed to a more beachy vibe). However, it takes a few things to align in place to have the perfect day for this project: First and foremost, you'll be removing your door off the hinges (much easier this way and less chance of paint drips), so you want to do this project at the start of the day to ensure you have enough time for the paint to dry on both sides to be able to hang the door back up before heading to bed (unless you're okay with guests coming and going as they please).
So, we waited for a day with nice weather (not to let any incremental weather into the house) and where we had a relatively free schedule to get started. First, we removed all of the hardware from the door (door knobs and locks) to make it a lot easier to paint the door without spilling paint onto the hardware. We also decided to remove the window glass pane from the top. This step is also definitely optional, since it takes a little extra work. However, we found it to be a lot easier to paint without any worry with all the additional parts removed from the door. Afterwards, we started with one coat of white primer, since the previous color of the door was a solid dark red. Then, we applied two coats of Williamsburg Blue paint from decoart. We absolutely loved this color of paint - it's trendier than a lot of other paint colors out there, and it was able to make a more subtle blue color pop at the same time!
We can't forget to paint the cross pattern design of the window pane. For this, you can go the extra mile and separate the pane from the glass by heating up the adhesive and separating the two. If you chose this path, you'd also have to go back and add back in the adhesive to reconnect the pane. This is honestly just not worth all the trouble for this, when you can get the same results from masking the glass with some painters tape and be more careful when painting the cross pattern.
After all the different parts were painted and dried, it was time to reattach the window pane and all of the hardware, just in time to lock up the house and head to bed.
We absolutely loved this project! It's a fun and easy task that you can do with your family that refreshes the look of your house and is noticeable all the way from the curb! Make sure you prep for this project so that you can get it all done in one shot, since it'll make it a lot easier and you'll feel pretty accomplished with the amount of wow factor you get from such a simple project!
I hope you enjoyed this project! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to comment below and I'll be sure to help out!
